ICAC queries abandoned murder case

THE Independent Commission Against Corruption is investigating why the Director of Public Prosecution's office dropped all charges against a man accused of murdering a six-year-old girl.

The investigation follows a complaint by the girl's father that the man charged with murdering her last September at a north-west Sydney home by giving her methadone in a cough mixture bottle had boasted of being able to influence the outcome of his case through connections in the Attorney-General's Department.

Vic's outgoing police minister defends record

Andre Haermeyer has defended his record as Victoria's Police Minister, after he was dumped in a Cabinet reshuffle.

Mr Haermeyer is swapping roles with the former Minister for Manufacturing and Export, and Small Business, Tim Holding.

Mr Haermeyer has stood by some of his more controversial decisions as minister, including his handling of police corruption and Melbourne's underworld murders.

"I've batted some very difficult issues for the Government, I'm pleased to have batted those issues, and I think at the end of the day, whilst there's been controversy, I think I've been vindicated," he said.

"Whether you want to have a look at road safety, we've saved lives, hundreds of them, whether you want to talk about underworld killings, and police corruptions, those trials will be coming up this year."

The reshuffle also included removing Mary Delahunty from Planning and Peter Batchelor from Major Projects.

The new Cabinet will be sworn in this afternoon.

For example, Senior Detective Jock Westland (Ethical Standards Department, Victoria Police) was seconded to the investigation by Ian Softman (Ombudsman's office). Jock Westland was given information about the existence of a video tape depicting police members actively participating in the ritual abuse of children. He was also given information about the child-victims' independent identification of a house where they were taken to, sexually abused, and filmed. This house was later revealed to be a police officer's home. Jock Westland failed to pass these most serious pieces of information on for further investigation, and when confronted with this, he denied ever having received the information. His denials continued until analysis of phone records, amongst other things, proved that he was lying."

Daniel has been missing for almost one year.
 
He's my nephew, and my brother Bruce and his wife Denise, have raised over  $100,000 to fund an advertising campaign which is currently underway, in an  attempt to solve Daniel's abduction, and hopefully to capture the person or  persons involved.
 
There has been wonderful coverage of this tragic event, including  "Australian Story" on the ABC, and a major article in the "The Australian Women's Weekly", but still the crime is not solved.
 
The police now think two men were probably involved, together with a "blue car" as per the composite photo below.
